Team betting research: spreads, totals and moneylines

Team betting research asks two different questions that are easy to mix up. First: how has the team done against the closing line in each past game (its against-the-spread and over/under record)? Second: how would the team have done against today’s line in its recent games? StatsNext answers both, keeps them apart, and adds the matchup context behind them: form, scoring and defense, rest, injuries and head-to-head history.

Closing-line records versus today’s line

Against the spread and over/under records

An ATS record grades each past game against that game’s own closing spread; an over/under record grades each game against its own closing total. StatsNext’s closing line is the most common last pregame line across the sportsbooks it tracks, fixed once the game starts. These are the records you see in Team Research under Betting performance.

Results against today’s line

Matchup Research’s Bet research section takes the current spread or total and grades the team’s recent games, its head-to-head meetings and its games at the same venue against it, each with the number of games behind it. This answers a different question (has this team been clearing a number like today’s?) and is never mixed with the closing-line records.

Both are shown on purpose. In a hypothetical case, a team could be 3-7 against the spread and still have cleared today’s spread in 7 of its last 10 games, because the lines it faced then were different.

Spreads, totals and moneylines

  • Spreads, named the way each sport names them: run line in baseball, puck line in hockey, handicap in soccer
  • Totals: game totals, graded over or under
  • Moneylines: straight-up win and loss records, overall, home and away

Each market shows the best price among sportsbooks for the identical line and side. Tap a market for every sportsbook’s price, the line movement and the game-by-game results against today’s line.

Matchup comparison

Matchup Research puts both teams side by side so you can see what shapes the number:

  • Form and records, overall, home and away
  • How each team scores and what it allows, with league ranks
  • Days of rest, back-to-backs and schedule spots
  • Injuries, and for the NFL, practice participation and depth charts
  • Head-to-head meetings with each meeting’s closing line
  • Weather for outdoor games
  • Starting quarterbacks, probable pitchers and starting goalies where the sport has them

For leagues StatsNext models, Game Intelligence adds a model-implied fair spread and total next to the market. Like every StatsNext model estimate, these are unvalidated.

Where the closing lines come from

StatsNext has recorded sportsbook lines itself since October 3, 2026, and closing lines come only from that tracking. Games before that date have no closing line in StatsNext, so ATS and over/under records start on October 3, 2026 and are much shorter than a multi-year database. A game without a tracked closing line is left out of ATS and over/under records, never graded against a guessed line, and a “last 10” record shows the real number of graded games when there are fewer than 10.

Reading team trends carefully

  • Look at the sample. A 4-1 record over five games is weak evidence.
  • Closing lines already reflect what the market knew; a team covering often may simply have been undervalued earlier, and the market adjusts.
  • Home and away splits shrink the sample further.
  • Head-to-head history spans different rosters.
