Betting trends research
A betting trend is a fact about past games, such as “Over 24.5 points in 8 of the last 10”. StatsNext lists a trend only when it meets an explicit pattern with enough games behind it, grades every player trend at the current line, and ranks a long record above a short one with the same rate. Trends describe what happened; they do not predict what will happen, and a pattern can end at any time.
The patterns a prop trend can show
Explore > Trends reads each priced prop on one side (the side you filter, otherwise the side its recent games favour) at the current consensus line. A reason is listed only when the pattern is strong and has enough games behind it:
- Recent form: the last 5, 10 or 20 games.
- Season: this season’s record at the line.
- Against this opponent: past meetings.
- Home or away: games at today’s venue side.
- Recent change: the last 5 games against the last 20.
- Context reasons: an opponent that allows a lot in the exact category and role, a meaningful teammate absence, a line or price move since the first quote, books on different lines, and material outdoor weather.
Players listed out are never surfaced, and one player cannot fill a list.
The current-season guard
Early in a season, a player’s most recent season of games may still be last season. A trend that said “this season” would then describe a different year. StatsNext counts the season pattern only when the prop’s season is the league’s current season, so last season is never labelled as this season. Rolling windows such as the last 10 can still reach back into last season, and the card shows the games behind them.
Why sample size comes before the percentage
A raw percentage favours tiny samples: 2 of 2 is 100%, 17 of 20 is 85%. Yet 17 of 20 is far stronger evidence than 2 of 2, so the default “Most consistent” order ranks long records above short ones, and a very short price comes last because its hit rate says little. Extreme prices are hidden unless you choose All. Other orders (largest change, opponent, market move, book disagreement) each sort by their one named measure, never a blended score. Each result also carries a one-line Evidence summary.
Team records: straight up, against the spread and over/under
Team Research shows a team’s betting performance: straight-up wins and losses, against-the-spread (ATS) and over/under records, each graded against that game’s own closing line. The closing line is the most common last pre-game line across tracked sportsbooks, fixed once the game starts.
- Tracked lines: StatsNext has recorded sportsbook lines itself since October 3, 2026. Closing lines come only from that tracking; earlier games have none.
- A game without a tracked closing line is left out of ATS and over/under records, never graded against a guessed line. A “last 10” record shows the real number of graded games when there are fewer than 10.
For college basketball, Trends lists team patterns from final scores (recent form, season record, home, road or neutral site, and meetings with the opponent), each with its record, longer records first. The team betting guide explains the difference between closing-line records and results against today’s line.
Why past trends do not predict results
- Selection: scanning hundreds of props will always find some long runs by chance. Requiring enough games reduces this but cannot remove it.
- Overlap: the last 5, 10 and 20 share games, so several reasons on one card can be one fact.
- Markets adjust: sportsbooks see the same history, and a line that a player cleared often may already have moved.
- Context changes: roles, opponents, injuries and lines differ from game to game.
